Information for Contributors

The Journal of Research in Special Educational Needs, a refereed online publication of NASEN, the United Kingdom's National Association for Special Educational Needs, establishes an international forum for the dissemination of research on special educational needs. The journal is published three times per year (March, June and September). Authors are invited to submit reports of original research, reviews of research and scholarly papers on methodology, research design and ethical issues.

Aims

The Journal of Research in Special Educational Needs aims to:

  • publish original research, literature reviews and theoretical papers on meeting special educational needs;

  • create a forum for researchers to reflect on and share ideas regarding issues of particular importance to them such as methodology, research design and ethical issues; and

  • reach a wide multi-disciplinary national and international audience through online publication.

Author Guidelines

The Journal of Research in Special Educational Needs publishes scholarly papers based on original research as well as critical reviews and theoretical essays. This includes submissions from a range of colleagues within the SEN field and across the disability community.

Authors are asked to be sensitive to the diverse international audience of the Journal and explain the use of terms that might be meaningful or have a specific meaning in a particular national context. The use of jargon should be avoided and technical terms defined. Standard stylistic conventions based on British spelling and form should be followed.

References should be listed in full at the end of the paper in alphabetical order of authors' names, and following the house style of the British Journal of Special Education. For example:

Balshaw, M (1999) Help in the Classroom. (2nd edition). London: David Fulton.

Further Education Funding Council (1996) Inclusive Learning: Report of the Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities Committee (The Tomlinson Report). London: FEFC.

Miller, C., & Porter, J. (1999) 'Standards for specialists? A review of the proposals for teacher training for SEN specialists'. British Journal of Special Education.. 26(1), 55-58.

Whitty, G. (1997) 'Creating quasi-markets in education', in M. Apple (ed.) Review of Research in Education (Volume 22) Washington DC: American Educational Research Association.

Illustrations, tables and figures should be numbered consecutively (e.g. Figure 1, Table, 1, Table 2, etc.) and submitted on separate sheets. The approximate position of tables and figures should be indicated in the manuscript.

An electronic copy of manuscripts of up to 6000 words should be sent to the Editor at the above address. If electronic submission is not possible, three hard copies can be posted to the Editor at the above address. Each article should be accompanied by a 150 word abstract on a separate sheet.

Manuscripts are subject to a blind peer review process, and authors should take care to identify themselves only on the title page or cover letter. The cover letter should confirm that the manuscript is original work, not under consideration or published elsewhere.

Publisher

The National Association for Special Educational Needs (NASEN) is the leading and largest professional organisation in the special educational needs field in the United Kingdom. The association exists to promote the interests of those with exceptional learning needs and/or disabilities; provide a forum for those actively involved with exceptional learning needs and/or disabilities and contribute to the formulation and development of policy in the area.
